Historically, the Kathmandu Valley and adjoining areas were known as Nepal Mandala. Bhaktapur was the capital of the valley until the 15th century. Today, Kathmandu is not only the capital of Nepal, but also the headquarters of the Central Development Region of Nepal. Kathmandu is located in the Bagmati Zone of the central region.

The establishment of Kathmandu city spans around 2000 years ago. Kathmandu Durbar

Kathmandu Durbar Square is situated in the heart of old Kathmandu city at Basantapur. Kathmandu Durbar Square also known as Hanuman Dhoka square which is one of the major attractions in Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu’s Durbar Square was the place where the city’s kings were once crowned and legitimised, and from where they ruled. Kathmandu Durbar Square never fails to impress first time visitors with its intricate wood carvings and rich history. The Durbar Square includes the Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace, the magnificent Taleju Temple towering more than 40 meters; Kumari Ghar, the residence of the Living Goddess, Kumari; Ashok Vinayak, also called Kathmandu Ganesh, a temple without a filial; and Kal Bhairav, the God of Wrath. The capital takes its name from the giant pagoda of Kasthamandap, which is said to have been built out of a single tree.

A UNESCO World Heritage, Swayambhunath, also known as the "Monkey Temple" among visitors from abroad. The most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu valley. It is one of the crowning glories of Kathmandu Valley architecture which is located on a hillock 3 km west of Kathmandu which is It is said to have evolved spontaneously when the valley was created out of a primordial lake more than 2,000 years ago. Historical evidence found on a stone inscription suggest that the stupa was a major destination of Buddhist pilgrimage by the 5th century AD. The area surrounding the stupa is filled with small shrines, chaityas, temples, prayer wheels, painted images of Tantric and shamanistic deities and numerous other religious objects.

Pasupatinath Temple

The temple of Lord Shiva is considered one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world. It is one of the 8 UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu Valley, built in the 5th century. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have existed from the beginning of the millennium when a Shiva lingam was discovered here. The main pagoda style temple has a gilded roof, four sides covered in silver, and the finest wood carvings. It stretches on both sides of the holy Bagmati river. Many temples dedicated to several other Hindu and Buddhist deities surround the temple of Pashupatinath. Hundreds of thousands of devotees from within Nepal and from India visit here during Maha Shivaratri festival. It is also a cremation site where the last rites of Hindus are performed.

Bouddhanath Stupa

Built during the 5th century, Boudha resembles one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. It is the center of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu. Standing top Boudhanath represents the omnipresent Buddha eyes on all four sides. As a world heritage site, it remains an important place of pilgrimage and meditation for Tibetan Buddhists and local Nepalis, as well as a popular tourist site. The stupa is surrounded by streets and narrow alleys lined with colorful homes, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and street vendors.
